You don’t need to wait until 1 January to grab yourself a designer fashion bargain in the sales. Many of the best high fashion websites have stock on sale for most or all of the year. There are some excellent fashion and designer bargains around. So check out our designer fashion online sale tips - and a couple of our favourite current sale bargains.

Out of season designer fashion bargains

If you’re off on holiday out of season (ie somewhere hot during winter) these designer fashion sales are a great way to get a reasonably up to date wardrobe without breaking the bank. (And if you’re one of those people who only take three items of clothing all tied up in a tiny Melissa Odabash bikini and can still last two weeks you’ll save even more. Though if you ARE one of those people what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be off doing a practice pack?).

Trends that are still on-trend

Online designer fashion sales tips Usual designer sale shopping advice is “ooh, go for classics!” which to me always conjures up images of a stunning but austere looking 50-something lady in taupe wide legged trousers, a biscuit-coloured silk blouse and a camel coloured winter coat (did you see what I did there with the beige thing?) . Nice, but a bit dull and I don’t want a bargain designer wardrobe that I can’t wear until 2025. Partly as I expect to be a good two stone heavier than now (though if fashion sizes are anything to go by, miraculously I’ll still be a size 10).
Far better to look for a recent trend that has some mileage in it – over the past couple of years I’ve had some gorgeous silk blouses bedecked with frills and bows from designers like Louella and Chloe, with amazing discounts from the Net a Porter sale area.(Check out MyWardrobe which lets you search the Sale area by trend – and Net a Porter where you can search the sale by Runway Looks). Something different

Online designer fashion sales tips Alternatively, search out clothing or accessories that are a bit different – not so trend led but with a bit more about them than a plain white blouse.Striking, well-cut pieces from brilliant designers really will end up being the pieces you pull out of your wardrobe year after year after year.

My most expensive designer sale buy was a half price Marc Jacobs leather handbag with a plaited handle – no It-bag (did it even have a name?) but it lifts any outfit (actually it makes pretty much any outfit look hideously scruffy in comparison so maybe not such a good buy after all).

Check the sales returns policy

If you aren’t sure about a purchase - particularly if you’re buying online – check their sales returns policy before you hit that Place Your Order button. They may offer a credit note only, or you may get a shorter returns period. If you do end up lumbered with something you don’t like, or doesn’t suit you, look at eBay, or a local second hand designer shop, or even a swap party with friends.

Ask for fashion help

Don’t be afraid to ask questions – particularly about sizes. I’ve used the fashion advisor teams at Matches Fashion and Net a Porter - both were very helpful and quick to respond.

Smaller fashion labels

Sale time can be a good time to try out new or smaller labels that may not have had as much coverage in the fashion press as the bigger designer names.

Search designer sale sites the way you want

Are you looking for a particular piece of clothing, or something by a particular designer, or maybe you have a set budget to buy something fabulous with? Lots of sites let you search by the best method for you. On MyWardrobe you can search the designer sale area by discount % so you know you’re getting the best bargains - or by trend, by product type, and event. On Net a Porter you can search by product, designer or by runway looks. On Matches Fashion you can search by product and by designer.

And if nothing here grabs your eye, can I interest you in a camel winter coat, never-worn?
