This Lola lace dress from maternity wear specialist designers Tiffany Rose is the best special occasion maternity dress I have found so far. (Tiffany Rose also do a fab collection of designer maternity wedding dresses and maternity bridesmaid dresses too).

The Lola lace dress is not particularly new (its claim to fame is that it was worn by Emma Bunton from the Spice Girls and GMTV’s Kate Garraway during their pregnancies) but as it is lace - which is one of those fashion Groundhog Day materials - that doesn’t really matter. (I know it’s a new season when I see yet another “Lace is back! But it’s a bit different from last time as it’s not as lacy/is a bit more lacy/is on bags/is made of old Tesco bags” fashion article.)

Anyway, back to the Tiffany Rose Lola lace dress. I love the long bell sleeves which add some interest and cleverly add volume away from one’s obviously massive bits; and the knee length, so if you still have shapely calves you get to show them off. The lace stretches so they suggest you can order your pre-pregnancy size, and the dress has a nude stretchy lining.

Tiffany Rose does have a good selection of maternity party dresses (and maternity wedding dresses) though personally I felt that the strapless satin prom dresses didn’t have quite as much of a wow factor, probably because they are on every high street (in non-pregnancy versions). Then again, for a lot of us pregnancy is the only time we have enough of a bust to keep them up, so we might as well make the most of it. Tiffany Rose also have some rather funky block colour maternity dresses and some cool prints.

I have had a look at the main designer fashion sites (Matches Fashion, My Wardrobe, Browns, Net a Porter) and I can’t find any maternity wear (I searched on Maternity). Why? I can understand celebrities are so tiny they just go up to, ooh, a size 12 when pregnant but what about the rest of us who want one or two great designer pieces to take our minds off feeling sick, heartburn, insomnia, being the size of a house…

I can see that some people would think designer maternity wear is a waste of money on the basis that you only wear it for a few months, but then again, the whole of the fashion industry is based on us only wearing something for a few months, pregnant or not, before we are miraculously convinced (by what methods I know not…) that it’s old and scruffy and we LITERALLY have nothing to wear. So why is pregnancy any different?
